Adding personality to your CV requires careful execution. Going overboard could put you at risk of losing opportunities you’ve been applying for. So how can you strike the right balance? Thankfully we’ve got some tips to help you!

Hobbies and interests are great for showcasing what you do in your personal time and how this will aid you in becoming a better candidate. With this said, it’s important to demonstrate hobbies that will captivate your employer. Reading, socialising, working out and going to the cinema are not hobbies that set you apart at all from everyone else.
Unless you have any hobbies that can paint you in a better light or make you sound more suitable for the job, omit them from your CV. If, however, you make amateur films in your spare time, run a fitness blog or anything else it’s worth including.
Don’t include interests or skills unless you truly possess them. Have a deeper think about genuine skills that you can include that will add value to the employer. Exaggerating your love for bird-watching could have knock on effects in which recruiter’s may end up questioning your work history or qualifications as a result. Keep it honest!
Personalised your opening statement
Use terms relevant to the vacancy you are applying for to highlight your suitability. Remember the personal statement may be what determines whether the employer will read the rest of your CV or not, so read it back several times to ensure it’s good enough to impress.
Here’s an example:
A recent business economics graduate with a 2:1 honours degree from the University of X, looking to secure a Graduate Commercial Analyst position to use and further develop my analytical skills and knowledge in a practical and fast-paced environment. My career goal is to assume a role which allows me to take responsibility for the analysis and interpretation of commercial data for a well-respected and market-leading leading company.
